Health Cover The Australian Government requires international students to be covered by health insurance and maintain cover for the length of their student visa. Students must purchase an Overseas Students Health Cover (OSHC) policy, approved by the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care, from a registered health benefits organisation. For your student visa to be granted, you will need to buy OSHC before you come to Australia, to cover you from when you arrive here.

What does OSHC cover? Most OSHC plans allow students to claim approximately 85 per cent of the fee for a standard medical consultation. OSHC does not cover dental treatment, optical treatment or physiotherapy. It is strongly recommended that students take out additional health cover directly with their provider to cover these services. A qualifying period applies for some services. Students should be aware that if they renew their visa offshore, or take a leave of absence from their studies and a new visa is issued from abroad, they will again be subject to a qualifying period for some services.

How long can I purchase OSHC for? Most providers offer OSHC for the duration of the student visa. This eliminates the need for students to pay their health insurance premiums annually. For more information, visit the Australian government's OSHC website.

There are four providers:

  • OSHC Worldcare
  • Medibank Private
  • BUPA Overseas Student Health Cover
  • Australian Health Management Group

Prospective students with disabilities or medical conditions are advised to discuss their individual needs with the respective University Counselling staff before accepting their offer.  For information on whether the standard OSHC covers treatment for pre-existing disability/medical conditions, please contact the individual health providers for more information.
